The SIRIUS-23 controlled experiment was launched on November 14, 2023 at the ground complex of the State Scientific Center IBMP RAS. It simulates a long-term flight to the moon lasting twelve months. During a space flight, there are significant changes in the local immunity and periodontal microbiome of astronauts, which are classified as risk factors for the development of inflammatory diseases of the dentofacial system.

The treatment of dysbiosis is complicated by the fact that the use of antimicrobials, including topical ones, leads to an aggravation of the imbalance of microbiome. Therefore, the search for means that normalize the microbial balance of the oral cavity is still relevant.

The "Phagodent" gel is suitable for the role of a candidate for solving this problem.
Scientists of RPC "Micromir" will be able to test the effectiveness of the bacteriophage complex as part of the unique isolation experiment SIRIUS-23, which started on November 14, 2023 with the support of the State Scientific Center of the Russian Federation – Institute of Biomedical Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
SIRIUS-23 is the fourth program to simulate a long-term expedition to the Moon. This time, six volunteer testers will spend 365 days in conditions close to a space flight. At the same time, scientists will be able to study the behavior of human body systems in six areas:
  • Psychology and psychophysiology.
  • Physiology.
  • Immunity.
  • Metabolism, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
  • Medicine.
  • Sanitation, hygiene and microbiology.
RPC "Micromir" is represented in the latter category. The SIRIUS-23 experiment should be completed at the end of 2024. It should be noted that the bacteriophage complex that is part of Phagodent has previously been in a space flight lasting up to 7 months and has retained specific activity.
